I did the calculations. It will blare at 5:23, and I will leave at 5:44. In 7 minutes, I will reach the station. At 5:51, I will grab a bagel from Hackett’s bakery, right next to the tracks. Old Nadia Dax will be there before me, as always, so it will take an extra 3 minutes than it should. She strolls up and down the rows of goods, declaring she will try something new, only to settle for a crumpet each time. What a bother. 5:56. In 4 minutes I will finish my breakfast and read the day’s newspaper. There’s nothing more to it than obituaries and the stock market. The 6 o’clock train will arrive like usual, and off to work I will go. Fast forward 13 hours. It will be 7:32 by the time I get back home. I would nurse them back to health and release them when they recovered. I walked on. Pause. Where I should have seen a homeless man in his forties was a child bundled in a quilt. She gazed at her tearing sandals with gloomy eyes that seemed to change color. Was it blue? Perhaps grey? No, it’s definitely jade. The girl’s dry brownish-blackish hair swept over her shoulders in loose pigtails. Next to her on the dirty concrete was a slat of cardboard that read â€Å"DARRYL W.† in bold black letters. Me? Nonsense. I checked my watch. 5:49. Two more minutes, or I’ll be off schedule. I walked on, not thinking much of the strange sign. The girl mumbled something, and I peered over my back, only to see her intently studying her feet. It must have been the wind howling. But it sure as hell wasn’t. For once, Nadia was not present at the bakery. Neither was Hackett, as someone unknown had taken over as cashier.
